I am delighted to announce that Soccer Moffat is now Powered by U.K. Elite Soccer.
After 42 years of providing soccer programs in Texas and the Southwest, I have found a partner that matches my desire to provide quality soccer camps and programs for players of all ages and abilities. Two of the top soccer programs in the country are now one!!
This exciting transition will guarantee that soccer families in Texas have access to some of the most innovative and talented coaches in the United States.
June and I came to the United States in April 1970, along with our 11 month old son, Dorian. We were both 24 years old. The Dallas Tornado of the old North American Soccer League (NASL) had bought my contract from Chelmsford City in England. Previously I had played at Portsmouth and Gillingham.
I arrived with a preliminary F.A. coaching license, and had coached in the Inner London Education Authority for 4 years as a visiting sports teacher. June had her own hairdressing business and was told that she would have no problem finding work in big 'D.'...
I would play soccer, she would work at her profession and I would look for a regular job, for the NASL at that time was a part-time occupation. June eventually found work in her profession while I, after more than a few unsuccessful weeks working as a salesman, finally took a job as a groundskeeper at a private school.
There were few coaching opportunities available for the players in the early days of the NASL, though one arose in Dallas when Ron Newman, the Tornado Head Coach, asked me to organize and run a three day camp at the Greenhill School, the first in the area and perhaps the first on the continent. The camp business grew year by year - we were on the cutting edge of a new industry - and by 1981 it had become our main source of income. By 1985 MEI/Techniques Soccer Camps - including our Residential Camps - had spread across West Texas, East Texas, parts of South Texas and New Mexico. I had become involved with the club socccer movement in Dallas/North Texas in the late 70's, and in 1980 I took our first European Soccer Tour, to Portsmouth in England. By the early 80's we had achieved our goal of owning and running a full-time soccer business.
On a quick calculation, over 140,000 players have passed through our Academies, Rent-A-Coach and Soccer Camps Programs (1970 to 2011). We have taken just over 6,000 players, coaches and parents overseas on our tours (1980 to 1997) where we played in nearly all of the top European tournaments - in the process returning to the states with first place trophies from the Dana Cup #1 (Denmark), the Portsmouth Cup (England), and the Brno Cup (Czech Republic).
Like a good number of others across the North American Soccer Scene, I have, apart from my coaching work, been involved at many different levels of 'the game' we all love: playing professionally; working in the Dallas Tornado office as the Marketing Director; taking the Dallas Americans into the ASL (1982) after the Dallas Tornado sadly folded (1981); starting the Flamefest tournament, which is still going strong; coached in and invited overeas teams to the Dallas Cup Youth Tournament (one of those, the British Royal Navy team and winners in 1981, are a competitor to this day).
Our children, Dorian, 42, a Realtor, and Lara, 38, a Landscape Architect, have grown up in the Dallas area - as has our grandchild - where our roots are deeply embedded.
Now, after over four decades of soccer involvement in the Southwest Soccer Scene, we are retiring from the day to day soccer activities which have obsorbed us. June is absolutely delighted - she deserves a rest - though I will remain involved with U.K. Elite for at least another two years, mostly in an advisory capacity.
When we first discussed the subject of selling our businesses, June and I agreed that should we not find the 'right fit' we would simply close it down. It wasn't an easy task, but clearly we have found that 'fit' in U.K. Elite, whose professionalism, coaching values, ethos and work ethics match the standards we have aspired to. The programs they offer are top drawer. June and I feel extremely comfortable in the choice we have made.
We wish to thank all of those we have associated with in our most positive of soccer adventures over more than four decades, and we look forward to running into as many of you as we can in the future, for our soccer story is not over yet. It still has many more years to run...
